Rumors have been flying around running back Leon Washington supposedly having conversations with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49′ers. Jets Twit had heard a buzz on Twitter and also saw a tweet from a local ESPN Radio Station in CA that tweeted:
Leon Washington rumors tied to the 49ers are heating up. They would have to give up a second rounder to get him. Injuries make it risky.
Rich Cimini from the daily news did more digging into the rumor and had this to say:
An ESPN radio station in Sacramento tweeted that the 49ers have talked to Washington. Did some checking and here’s the deal: Washington has talked to a member of the 49ers’ coaching staff, presumably former Jets RB coach Jimmy Raye, but Washington’s agent has had no contact with the 49ers’ front office, a source said.
So Alvin Keels hasn’t made any contact with the 49′ers front office. Many people are tweeting telling me that Leon won’t be going anywhere because no one is going to take a chance on a back with a large question mark on his leg.
I say there is still a chance however. Where there is smoke, there’s fire, and all it takes is one team to sign a player. Rich thinks that a team would be interested as well but says it may take a month:
Whatever happens with Washington — if anything happens — don’t expect it to be for another month. Teams want to let him heal as much as possible, so they’ll wait until the end of the restricted signing period (around mid-April) before getting serious.
