New Jet Cromartie Mans Up with Positive Press Conference

Cromartie

Jets nation is buzzing with the trade to get Antonio Cromartie from the Chargers for basically next to nothing, a 3rd round pick in 2011 that can move to a 2nd based on what he does this season.  Yesterday the new CB for the Jets addressed the press about his troubled past:

“The things I need to get tied up and taken care of before I start the offseason workout program are my child support issues,” Cromartie said. “Those things are being taken care of as we speak, and they’re being handled in the right way. That is the responsibility I have to take. Those are my kids, and I’m going to be the best father to them I can be. That’s my responsibility off the field.

There is an obvious risk here but the reward could be great!  Looking through the channels and hearing the talking heads say that the Jets most likely have the best cb tandem in the NFL with Darrelle Revis “Revis Island” and Antonio Cromartie “Alcatraz”.

Cromartie insists that his off the field troubles to not translate to issues on the field:

“It won’t impact my focus on the field,” Cromartie said. “I can separate my personal life and off-the-field issues from football. I’m going to have a clear head this season and just go out and play football the way I’m capable of playing.

“I made some wrong decisions my first two years in the NFL. Now I have to take on that responsibility of being a father to my kids.”

Here are some of Cromarties LOW LIGHTS off the filed according to Brent Schrotenboer from the Union Tribune:

  • Failed to appear in court twice for different traffic tickets and hasn’t paid $799 in traffic-related fines, causing the Department of Motor Vehicles to withhold his driver’s license application.
  • He is scheduled to appear in San Diego Superior Court later this month for a judgment debtor’s exam related to child support he owes one of the mothers of his children.
  • Last month, the Union-Tribune reported Cromartie was past due on about $25,000 in child support, according to court records and a local attorney.
  • Cromartie has at least seven children with six different women in five states. All children are under 6.

Only time will tell if his words translate to action for his children but I really like what I see so far from the new Jet.  He has been positive on Twitter and the press conference went well.

There's no getting around the fact that 7 kids with 6 women has the potential to cause you problems. And they're the sorts of problems that can affect your performance at work.

But I'd more worried if we weren't hearing anything from him. The fact he's out there talking about his problems dies give the impression that he genuinely wants to put them behind him.

Plus, the fact that these were issues that were in the public domain means that Mike T and the team have had to consider all these factors. And they still wanted to do the deal.

    That's good enough for me.

I think the Jets have done a solid bit of business here. They've brought in a solid CB which was needed, created arguably the best duo in the league. And almost as importantly, it's freed up a draft pick.

I was one of those clamouring for a CB to be our first pick. That can now be saved for a solid pass rusher.

In which case, you could argue that for a 2011 3rd round draft pick, we've upgraded to the best CB partnership in the NFL, AND got a free #29 pick this year (as we won't be using it on a CB).

My verdict: J-E-T-S yes yes yes!
  • It's good enough for me as well! He's going to see a TON of action because teams are still not going to throw to Revis' side!

We DO NEED to get a pass rusher. I wonder now that Rhodes was traded they change their strategy and get a Safety? I think we get a DE or a WR, but we definitely need a pass rusher!
