Jets GM Wants Edwards to Put in More Time at Florham Park

Edwards

Mike Tannebaum spoke yesterday at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on his desire to have Braylon Edwards spend more time during the offseason getting better with Mark Sanchez.

“With Braylon this is going to be a really important off-season for him in terms of being more acclimated with our offense and working with Mark everyday,” Tannenbaum said.

“Braylon did a lot of great things for us. As Rex mentioned more than once he really helped our running game, he’s a tremendous blocker. How defenses played us after we graded for Braylon changed. He has done a lot of things that don’t show up on the stat sheet. We are glad he’s here, we will tender him. It’s a really important off-season for him to be with us all the time because I really think it will give him the opportunity to be a better player to be in our program every day.”

It is Edwards desire to receive a long term contract with the Jets.  Rich Cimini of The Jets Stream reports:

Tannenbaum is expected to tender Edwards at a first and third-round pick with the wide receiver slated to make approximately $5.5 million. The Jets, who have the right of first refusal, can receive first and third-round picks as compensation if they choose to for Edwards.

Tannenbaum can’t order Edwards to be at every voluntary workout and offseason training programs. But the GM pretty much said he wants Edwards with the Jets as much as possible.

Edwards drops a pass in the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills at Rogers Centre on December 3, 2009

Braylon has been clearly inconsistent and the dropping passes has plagued him for most of his career.  I think if he changes his attitude about the offseason and becomes a gym rat at Florham Park, he will start to change the perception about him.  Of course the proof is always in the “pudding” and he will have to show the results on the field.

I don’t think anyone is expecting Braylon to have a revalation and become “Jerry Rice” overnight with the way he used to train.  One of the greatest stories I had heard about Rice was this past Month when he learned he was going into the Hall of Fame. After winning the Super Bowl vs the Chargers, Steve Young was in the facilites days after to clean his locker when he noticed a player running wind sprints on the field.  It was Jerry Rice getting ready the next season.  Ok, most receivers will never have that attitude, but Braylon needs just a “pinkie toe” of Jerry’s attitude.

What is your opinion of Braylon Edwards?  Do you want the Jets to sign him to a long term deal?  Do we give him one more year to prove himself?  Let us know!
