ESPN’s Page 2 has a segment called The Most Memorable Sports Apologies and has listed 25 from all sports. Our fearless leader Rex Ryan has made number 9:
9. Rex Ryan
The 411: While attending an MMA fight in Florida shortly before Super Bowl XLIV, Jets coach Rex Ryan responded to taunts by Dolphins fans by flipping them the middle finger, which was captured on a cell phone camera and shared extensively over the Internet.
The Apology: Before the incident, Ryan told the crowd in an interview, “I want to just tell everybody in Miami, hey, we’re coming to beat you twice next year.” A few days later, Ryan said the gesture “was stupid and inappropriate.
The Aftermath: Ryan was fined $50,000 by the Jets, but we suspect he earned respect of about 98 percent of the team’s fans in the process. Oh, and the Jets probably will beat Miami twice next year.
That is pretty surprising considering 18. Kobe Bryant (Wife Cheater), 17. Mark McGwire (Cheater), 14. Jason Giambi (Cheater), 13. Andy Petitte (Cheater), 12. Alex Rodriquez (Cheater) and 10. Wade Boggs (Wife Cheater) all were considered “better” than what Rex did.
WOW. If I was ranking these, Rex would not have even made the list! He apologized because he was made to, and what he did was not even that terrible considering that the Dolphins fan SPIT in Rex’s face while calling him some nice things.
By the way, there will be a NEW NUMBER 1 today once Tiger Woods takes the podium to offer his apology for cheating on his wife and going into a Sex-capade with just about anyone this past year.
So Do you think this was well deserved? Should Rex be on this list? Take the poll or add your comments below! We want to hear from YOU!
