Revis Discusses How He Uses Social Media with Mashable.com

Revis Tweets.

I was browsing theJetsBlog.com as I always do and saw this link to Mashable about social media and Darrelle Revis.  I LOVE how players use social media (Just read the tag line of this blog, so a BIG SHOUT OUT to Bassett for putting this on his blog).

Adam Ostrow from Mashable had an opportunity to Interview Mathew Standford and Darrelle Revis together while they were doing their tests with Gatorade. Revis was tweeting about that yesterday.

Stafford admits to being a bit slow to social media, though Revis has been a big proponent, maintaining both a Twitter presence (where he somewhat famously got into a trash talking match with the omnipresent Ochocinco) and a Facebook Page. Revis even told me he plans to launch “Revis Island” t-shirts, alluding to his moniker which got significant buzz as the Jets made their surprise playoff run.

The Term “Revis Island” has taken off this year and I don’t blame Darrelle from trade marking that and cashing in.  He’s on top of his game right now and he should get paid anyway he can.

I like this question by Ostrow as he asks:

2. What’s it like for you interacting with fans online? Do you think it’s now part of your job as an athlete?

Revis: I think Twitter’s a good tool for fans to get to talk to us on a daily basis and see what we’re up to and our day-to-day activities. I read my replies to see where people’s minds are at and how they feel.

You can tell Darrelle gets it.  He understands people.  Every interview I see, every response to diversity, and even nasty tweets to the DB, Darrelle handles it with class.

I recently came across a video that Steiner Sports Memorabilia put online of Darrelle when we was in-house to do a signing.  He was holding his daughter and his demeanor is always pleasant.

The admin of the site saw that I tweeted about the video and called Revis a class act and I got a response:

5. Did you get any training on social media from your team or the NFL?

Revis: There are certain things both the NFL and the Jets try and prep you on with how to use Twitter. Some people still say whatever they want and that gets you in trouble sometimes … There’s also some people just don’t want to interact with fans and at first I wasn’t even on Twitter. But I started seeing how it was progressing and people were showing it to me so I got into it. I was missing out.

Earlier in the season, Jane McManus, a sportswriter who covers the jets, was tweeting from the facility that the Jets had Twitter guidelines in the locker room.  I tweeted her BEGGED her to send me pictures of some of them. Most of the rules were common sense and for the most part the Jets stayed out of trouble.  David Clowney learned the hard way this season about watch what you tweet, but the one controversial day had nothing to do with the player directly.  He was hacked and his Twitter account went crazy.

I obviously support players using social media, and Darrelle Revis should be a role model to other professional sports players of the RIGHT way to interact online.
