Social Networking site, Twitter, will have MANY fans calling their own game during the biggest game in sports tomorrow when the Indianapolis Colts take on the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl 44! It is very common for some fans to tweet play by play as the game unfolds live. Others like to partake in conversations about the game while it’s being played live. It’s like you are in the room with thousands of your closest friends.
Others just add their commentary usually during a controversial play. Warning parents, I have been on Twitter during such calls by the zebras and let’s just say that if your computer could talk, I’d be telling you to put “ear muffs” on your children!
Don’t be surprised if you see the Twitter Trends showing all football terms during the game. (Keywords Twitter puts on the side of their site that are being tweeted significantly live in their network).
You most likely will see trends like, Colts, Saints, Manning and Brees. You will also see hashtags such as #WhoDat and #SB44 or #PeytonManningisthebestever. During the commercials, you will see hashtags as well, possibly #budlight, #SBCommercials, #IWASTEDMILLIONS etc. From the Jets fan base, you will see #J_E_T_S_JETS_JETS_JETS!! and #INREXWETRUST!
AVID GRUNFELD / THE TIMES-PICAYUNE Lauren Thom, owner of Fleurty Girl on Oak Street in New Orleans, Thursday, January 28, 2010.
Laruen Thom, a huge Saints fan, took the hash tag to another level by creating a t-shirt with the tag #whodat and the saints logo in the middle of it. They became very popular which prompted the NFL (No Fun League) to send her a cease-and-desist letter but since has backed off since getting national attention. The NFL does not own hashtags.
Realizing though that social media is becoming a large part of the NFL experience, they decided to jump in the water:
So far, the National Football League has taken notice. It is asking fans to “Tag the Super Bowl #SB44.”
Translation: The NFL has designated an official hash tag (#SB44) for users to categorize their Super Bowl-related tweets. The league plans to aggregate the material onto its Web site to show fans what people are saying about the game on Twitter.
Others take part because you get to SHARE your experience with anyone, including other athletes:
“Once you add that sharing factor, now you really are participating in the event,” Warshaw said. “That’s just why social networking works so well for sports, because you share in that sporting event with other people.”
It also doesn’t hurt that some hometown heroes, like Saints quarterback Drew Brees, have become part of the Twitterati (or Tweetstars).“You can talk right back to the athletes,” Warshaw said. “If it was a bad play, then you can attach their name right to the message.”
Jets fans that follow this blog and are on Twitter know that the Jets players in the twitter-sphere DO talk back to the fans on a regular basis. To see what Jets are on Twitter, you can follow their tweets live on our site using our widget.
